PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER, VOL. 1 No. 9, 10th November 2006

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The Students of the Week ending 3rd November 2006 were: Joy Mugo (Play Group), Olivia McKeown (Nursery), Joshua Kormann (Reception), Liban Ismael (Y1), Jamie Jennings (Y2), Shamsa Abdalla (Y3), Darren Thomas (Y4), Katie Jennings (Y5) and Kristy McGovern (Y6). Well done everyone!

The report for the Under 11 Girls' Rounders match played on Thursday 2nd November against Aga Khan Academy (away) is as follows:

After Captain Yvonne Bachmann (Y6) won the toss, our players stormed through a commanding first innings scoring 7 rounders in total. Yvonne, Sangita, Fatima and Olivia all made impressive "home runs".
This gave them the confidence to take clean catches and limit the Aga Khan girls' rounders to only 4½ in their first innings with a competent display of fielding. Debutant Fatima so impressed us with her hard hitting that we feared her bat would break.
Despite a disappointing second innings in sometimes hostile conditions, our girls bravely battled on to clinch a draw, our best result yet against this team.

Our thanks go out to parent fans who also travelled to support us. Hopefully, next week, we'll be able to set an attacking field against Shree and give you more to cheer about.
(Report by Mrs. N. Gicheru on behalf of the Braeburn Breakers)

The report for the Coast Junior Swimming Championships at Aga Khan on Saturday 4th November is as follows:

We took a group of 32 swimmers, all from the Primary School, ranging from 6 to 11 years of age. Although the event lasted from Friday to Sunday, we only took part on Saturday. Out of 13 schools competing, we came 5th overall in the girls' category and 7th in the boys'. In the overall Girls' standing, Careena Pradhan was placed 7th. In the overall Boys' standing, Alexander Onyango was placed 6th and Jamie Nicholas 11th. In the Individual Standing Age Group, the following places were awarded:
7 years - Thomas Haller 2nd overall and Anyango Blanchet 3rd;
8 years - Olivia Cowan 3rd overall, Telvin Stokes 6th, Reinout Sanders 7th and Amy Phillips 10th.
10 years - (Boys) Eric Hoskins 8th with Richard Sanders and David Nesbitt 12th equal.
10 years - (Girls) Careena Pradhan 4th and Sonia Soares 12th.
11 years - (Girls) Yvonne Bachmann 7th.
11 years - (Boys) Alexander Onyango 4th and Alex Galimberti 7th.
(Report by Mr. Farid Mohamed)

A very big thank you to all the teachers and parents who gave up their time to put the Fun Day together last Friday. Thanks also to everyone who contributed cakes for the bake sale. The takings were in the region of Ksh.31,000.

The Year 5 and 6 trip to Tsavo sets off this weekend on Friday 17th November at 12.30 pm and returns on Sunday 19th November at approximately 3.00 pm. I would like to thank Mrs. Veronique Jennings for all her work in organising this trip and we wish everyone a very enjoyable time.

Exam week begins on Monday 20th November but there will be no exams for Years 5 and 6 until Tuesday 21st November. This will give them a day to recover from their trip. Homework may be revision for a lot of subjects. Please encourage your children to revise if that is what they have been asked to do. After school activities will continue during exam week.

Thank you, Y1, for your lovely assembly. There is a change to the calendar next week as the Early Years will now do their assembly on Friday 24th November. Next week Ms. Chege will take charge with the upper juniors presenting a Kiswahili assembly. If your child is involved, you will see a note in the diary.

I am very pleased to inform you that Mr. Gannaway is back in Mombasa and in the best of spirits. He returned on Wednesday night and is to rest completely for at least one week. After that we may see him around but he will not be resuming work this term.

Have a good weekend.

Yours sincerely

SECONDARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER, VOL. 1 No. 9, 10th November 2006

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Today an under 13s Rounders team and a Swimming team have left for Nairobi to compete in a Rounders tournament being held at Hillcrest School and the National Age Group Swimming Championships held at Kasarani respectively. A number of our students are taking part in both events. The students are being accommodated at Braeburn College. We take this opportunity to wish the teams well in these championships.

I am pleased to report that Mr. Gannaway has now returned to Kenya from receiving medical treatment in India.

Unfortunately, due to problems caused by the continuing rains, a number of fixtures have had to be cancelled at the last minute. I can only apologise for the inconvenience this has caused to a number of our parents. We will endeavour to reschedule the fixtures where possible.

On Tuesday we are taking a number of students to watch an international cricket one day game of Kenya versus Bermuda held at Mombasa Sports Club. This is the first time that Mombasa has hosted an international team and we would like to thank the Kenya Cricket Association and the Mombasa Cricket club for the invitation.

A big thank you to all the parents who have signed up to receive this newsletter by email. If you would also like to receive this newsletter by email, thereby conserving paper and helping our school to become more environmentally friendly; please send an email request to mis@africaonline.co.ke

Have a lovely weekend.

Andy Hill,
Headteacher
