PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER, VOL. 1 No. 6, 12th October 2006

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The Students of the Week ending 6th October 2006 were: Sean Koessick (Play Group), Richard Neylan (Nursery), Alix Keates (Reception), Hawa Karega (Y1), Naeem Yusuf (Y2), Shamsa Abdalla (Y3), Mohamed Karega (Y4), Hamada Hamada (Y5) and Celia Seeger (Y6). Well done everyone!

In last week's Girls' Under 10 Rounders match against Shree (away), our girls were victorious with a score of 6 to 6½. Well done, girls!

In the National Age group Short Course Gala at Aga Khan School on Saturday and Sunday, the girls came 4th out of 13 competing schools. Alex Onyango (Y6) was the only boy representing us in the Primary School but these competitors were largely older children. I would like to thank all the parents and children who attended and Mr. Farid for his hard work at the weekend.

There is another Gala on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th November at Oshwal Academy. This is the Coast Junior Swimming Championship which was not mentioned on our calendar because the date has only just been fixed. It is for 5 - 11 year olds and I'm sure that many of our pupils will be competing. Mr. Farid is going to arrange it so that our competitors need only attend ONE of those days.

We celebrated World Sight Day on Thursday with a non-uniform collection and a cheque was presented to the Kwale District Eye Centre. The children played some games and had their awareness of the importance of sight raised. I would like to thank the Kwale District Eye Centre and the School for the Blind for their input.

Thank you Y4 for your assembly today. On Friday 27th October it will be the turn of Y3.

Tuesday 24th October marks the end of Ramadan and will be a public holiday. Parents of boarders should contact Ms. Kimutai if they wish to give their children an extended weekend.

I'm sure no-one needs reminding that next week is Half Term. Just a reminder, however, that on the week we return there is a non-uniform day on Wednesday 25th October, and on Thursday 26th October there is an Under 11 cricket match against Shree (away) and a friendly Under 11 rounders match against Aga Khan at home.

Have a good holiday.

Yours sincerely

SECONDARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER, VOL. 1 No. 6, 12th October 2006

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Yesterday was World Vision Day. Kwale District Eye Hospital representatives visited the school offering games and activities to the primary students, a presentation, and a discussion for the secondary students.

Today we have our inter house quiz. I will forward the results in the next newsletter.

A number of our students will be re-sitting Cambridge International GCSEs and AS Levels during late October and early November. We wish all the students well with these external examinations.

Tuesday 24th October has been gazetted as a public holiday to celebrate the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

Swahili Trip to Malindi - Mrs Hassan.
On Monday the 9th of October, the Swahili students from years 7 - 11 set off on a thrilling educational trip to Malindi. Our first stop over was at the Gede National Monument in Watamu. Here, the students had the rare opportunity of walking through the ruins of an ancient Swahili town and studying its history. We were intrigued to go into what used to be royal palaces, courts and mosques. In the museum, the students were able to see, draw and learn the names of various Swahili artefacts dating back to the 13th century.
While navigating our way through Malindi town, we observed various economic and day to day activities of the local Swahili people. They included fishing and net making, dhow building, jewellery making etc.
We came back the same evening exhausted but more knowledgeable in the Swahili culture and history. We also learnt some new proverbs and Mr. Kirby too had a chance to expand his Swahili vocabulary.

Swimming - National Age Group Championships 7th - 8th October -Mr. Farid
Out of 13 schools we came 4th overall, tying with Oshwal Academy, Mombasa with 79 points in the girls category. In the boys category we only sent one swimmer, Alex Onyango. Olivia Wameyo obtained overall 5th place in the under 11s category. Anham Salyani took second place overall in the 14 -15 years age group.
