PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER, VOL. 1 No. 1, 12th January 2007

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We have completed our first week of the New Year!

Regrettably, the swimming pool pump broke down in the last week of the holiday and had to be completely replaced. Our pool chemical suppliers failed to deliver chemicals on time after several urgent telephone calls forcing us to cancel our contract with them and taking on a new supplier. Consequently, the swimming pool was out of action this week but is now operational again.

Activities begin on Monday. Thank you for returning the forms so promptly.

We are in the process of registering our Scout Group and the children who are involved in Scouts on Wednesday will be getting a letter about this. Once we are registered they will be able to wear the uniform and earn badges which will make it far more exciting.

Curriculum letters detailing the work to be covered this term will be issued by Class teachers on Monday and there will be a Primary School Parents' Evening on Friday 26th January from 3.00 pm - 5.30 pm.

Next Thursday is a non-uniform day. Children are asked to bring Ksh.50 which will go to charity. Last term all collections went to the Kwale Eye Centre.

Just a reminder that next Saturday (20th January) the Mwenge Soccer School commences here in BMIS at 9.30 am and finishes at 12.00 pm. It is open to boys and girls from the age of 7 upwards and participants from outside Braeburn will also be welcome. Those who attend the introductory session will be told what the fee is and they can then make the decision to join or not.

We are very happy to have Mr. Gannaway back with us but he will be part-time until half term. Mr. Ndune will continue with the classes he had last term until then. A number of new orchestral instruments including trumpets and flutes have arrived from the UK and if children wish to learn them, they should talk to Mr. Gannaway.

We have about 11 students and parents who wish to take the ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) exams in May/July. We are still hoping to register as a centre but, ideally, we need 15 candidates. If you or your children wish to sit the exams, please let me know by Friday 26th January. Even if we are unable to becomea centre this year, candidates can be entered for the exams here and the fees are as follows:
Preparatory Exam Ksh. 2,770
Grade 1 Ksh. 3,000
Grade 2 Ksh. 3,630
Grade 3 Ksh. 3,860
Grade 4 Ksh. 4,150

I have already mentioned the need for shin pads this term. Mouth guards are also advisable but not compulsory. Most children have their own hockey sticks but these should be labelled. Many come from the same shop and will be of the same make and colour so it is advisable to scratch names on rather than just use marker pen.

There are an increasing number of educational visits taking place and Year 4 will be the first class to go this term with a trip to Jumba Ruins next week. I hope they will enjoy this fascinating site on our very own doorstep.

LAMDA classes began this week. If you would like to enroll your child in LAMDA, please collect the enrolment form from the school office.

It is very important that children know their times tables. At school they are chanted and written and they are often given as homework. Children who know their tables are at a very great advantage over those who do not. Parents are able to help by getting their children to recite their tables in the evenings. However, it is important that they recite them properly i.e. "once two is two, two twos are four" etc. and not merely saying, "two, four, six, eight" etc which will not help them when confronted with such a question as 7 x 2. There will be an opportunity to discuss issues such as this with teachers on 26th.

Have a good weekend.

Yours sincerely

SECONDARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER, VOL. 1 No. 1, 12th January 2007

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Clubs and activities will begin on Monday. We have three new clubs on offer to the secondary school this term. Ecoschools is a club that aims to make sustainable development a part of the life and ethos of the school. Cricket coaching offers the students a chance to be coached professionally. The dance club will allow the students to express themselves through this media. We also have all the traditional clubs such as President's Award, Hockey training and Chess to name a few. Please ensure that your child has the correct equipment for the activities chosen. We are also recommending that students wear the school cap whilst participating in games and activities outside the classroom.

Any student participating in the Ecoschools activity on Thursdays should wear clothes they do not mind getting muddy. Any gardening tool would be welcome.

The Mwenge Sports Centre Limited football coaching will begin on Saturday 20th January from 9.30 am until 12.00 pm. It is open to boys and girls from 7 to 21 years olds, BMIS students and non-BMIS students. They will be coached by Mohamed Kheri (ex -national team coach) and Ricky Solomon (ex-national player and technical panel member - Harambee Stars). An article on this can be found on page 39 of Thursday 11th January's edition of The Standard.
