PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER, VOL. 3 No. 4, 18th May 2007

Dear Parents and Guardians,

PRIMARY NEWS

Students of the Week
The Students of the Week ending 11th May 2007 were: Liv Mary Funke (Play Group), Adam Gichaga (Nursery), Merlin Bosse (Reception), Malaika Noor Mohamed (Y1), Thomas Haller (Y2), Wilfred Nokes (Y3), David Nesbitt (Y4), Stanley Nokes (Y5) and Yvonne Bachmann (Y6). Well done, everyone!

U11 Football and Netball matches played last Thursday
The U11 Football team lost their match 2-0 against Aga Khan at home last Thursday but it was an extremely fast moving and close game where Matthew Walters (in goal) made some excellent saves. I was also very impressed by the performances of Captain Bradley Lionnet and Alex Canobbio who both played extremely well.
The U11girls also lost their Netball away match against Jaffrey Academy 8-4. This was played in the pouring rain but we are proud of the team spirit shown by our girls. Well done!

U11 Netball tomorrow and Tuesday
Our U11 netball team will be competing in the Aga Khan tournament on Saturday. We wish them lots of luck. There are also matches at home against Aga Khan and Mombasa Academy on Tuesday. We hope for better weather next week and wish our girls every success.

U11 Football Tournment at Aga Khan tomorrow
We wish our team every success. Mr. Gitau tells me that some of our key players will not be able to attend. However, we have a lot of talent and enthusiasm among those who can and I hope they enjoy the experience.

Bio Foods National Junior Championships in Nairobi
We had to pull out of this gala due to the heavy rains and the state of the Mombasa Road. It is not safe to drive a school bus to and from Nairobi at this time.

Revision for Exams
We only have one week and three days left before half term. Exam week starts immediately after that (4th - 8th June). Homework from Monday will be mainly revision. Please encourage your children to revise seriously - it does make a huge difference in exams. Teachers will give them revision notes during the week but in subjects like Literacy, revision of spellings and rules of punctuation may be accompanied by comprehension exercises or creative writing which it is very important that they do on their own. In Numeracy they should revise their tables but they will also have revision exercises to do such as problem solving.
For Science, ICT, Humanities and Languages, they will be given specific revision notes reminding them of all the work they have covered during the year. Please make sure they set some time aside in the evenings to study these notes.
The timetable for these exams has been attached to this newsletter.

Y6 SATs
Year 6 will do their ICT, History, Geography, Kiswahili and French exams in the same week as everyone else but the English, Mathematics and Science SATs papers will be administered in the week of 11th - 15th June in line with the other schools.
The timetable for these SATs will be issued as soon as possible.
Message from Mrs. Dale
Mrs. Dale will be giving her RE classes a timed assessment during their normal RE lessons in which they will be asked to use their thinking, exploring, interpreting, responding and reflecting skills at an appropriate level.

Y6 Induction Day
I hope Y6 enjoyed their day in the Secondary School and that they now have a good idea of what to expect next term.

Year 2
Next Thursday and Friday Mrs. Miranda will be in Nairobi and her class will join Mrs. Jiwaji and Y3 but Mrs. Dale will take them separately for Numeracy and Literacy. As Mrs. Jiwaji will be their Class Teacher next term it will be a good opportunity to get to know each other.

Junior French Poetry Competition
Mr. Kirby attended a meeting at Oshwal Academy this week as we were invited to participate in their Junior French Poetry Competiton. It is to be held on Tuesday 12th June from 1.00 pm - 4.00 pm at Oshwal but only one child from each year group will be able to represent the school. If your child is chosen, Mr. Kirby will be contacting you.

Appreciation for 'wet play' activities
We would like to express our thanks to all the parents who have contributed indoor games which the children can play during wet play times. Particular thanks to Mrs. Nicole Rogers and Mrs. Lisa Nesbitt for their kindness and generosity.

Assemblies
Thank you Mrs. Jiwaji and Y3 for your lovely assembly on Wednesday. Next Friday will be Y1's assembly as they have swapped weeks with Y2 because of Mrs. Miranda being in Nairobi.

Have a good weekend.

Head Teacher

SECONDARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER, VOL. 3 No. 4, 18th May 2007

Dear Parents and Guardians,

On Wednesday 23rd May between 3pm and 4pm, Mr Bruce Philips of Bucaneer Diving will run a dive trial session in the school pool for years 5 to 10. If you are still interested in your child taking part please return the forms by Monday 21st May.

Social netball is on offer on Fridays between 3.00pm and 4.30pm. A number of mothers are already participating, more required!

There are a number of IGCSE and A level exams in the school holidays. Students are responsible for their own transport during this time, they are not required to wear school uniform.

Chess club, Steven Kirby

I am pleased to report that the chess club which I run is going from strength to strength. The fine potential grandmasters are Kyle (Y10), Blaine (Y6), Tevin (Y4), Dominic (Y4) and Elisha (Y4). They are beginning to take the game more seriously now. Games are played quietly with the correct terminology used and students are aware of both basic and more subtle moves. I am now investigating the possibility of taking a chess team to a rival school for our first competitive game. If there are any parents out there who play chess to a reasonable standard and fancy doing battle with me over the chess board I would be more than happy to hear from you.
