PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER, VOL. 3 No. 1, 30th April 2007

Dear Parents and Guardians,

House Point Certificates
The following children in Y5 were awarded Bronze Merit Certificates at the end of last term for obtaining 25 house points: Eric Hoskins, Richard Sanders and Hamada Hamada. Our first Silver Merit Certificate was also awarded in the final assembly to Stanley Nokes, also from Y5, who obtained 50 house points. There were also three boys in Y4 who obtained Merit certificates but were not awarded them. These will be awarded today to David Nesbitt and Jamie Nicholas (25 house points - bronze) and Oliver Holding Fay (50 house points - silver). Well done!

Newly Grassed Area
During the holiday the stones and top roots of the trees in the Primary quadrangle were removed, top soil added and paper grass planted. This grass grows under trees. Because it is not yet established I have had to put this area out of bounds including the big climbing frame. As soon as I can let the children play on the grass again, I will. However, this will not be an area for ball games.

Activities
After school activities begin on Monday. Thank you for sending back the forms so promptly. LAMDA started yesterday.

Appointments with Teachers
We try to be as available as possible to parents and in the diaries you will find appointment slips for teachers. Please, kindly use these so that teachers can meet with you at a mutually agreeable time. Please do not try to see teachers when they have classes.

The Zambia Invitational Swimming Gala
Three of our students, including one from the Primary School, were selected to represent Kenya at the Olympic Stadium in Lusaka, Zambia on Friday 6th April. These were Olivia Cowan (Y5), Nicole Leichum (Y8) and Anham Salyani (Y10). They managed to win two bronze medals for their country and we are very proud of them.

Calendar Additions and Changes
The photographer from Nairobi will be coming to take individual, sibling group, class, school and team photographs on Monday 7th and Tuesday 8th May.
The Kenya Conservatoire of Music has just informed me of a change of date for the ABRSM exams. They will now be in the morning of Friday 8th June. This is the same morning as the Y1 assembly but, because will not be able to use the Long Room where the exams will take place, Mrs. Sassoon has agreed to have her assembly on Wednesday 6th June. PLEASE MAKE THE NECESSARY ADDITIONS/ALTERATIONS TO YOUR CALENDARS.

Educational Visits
On Wednesday Y5 visited the Kwale Eye Centre as part of the Geography project. They returned very much wiser than when they left and they raised over Ksh.6,700 themselves to give to the centre. A full report will be in next week's newsletter.

New Early Years Children
Next term some of our Early Years siblings will be old enough to join the Play Group. It may be advantageous for them to come for one or two days each week after half term. The fee would be charged per day the child attends. Ms. Winnie has had several new children this term and she would like to have them fully settled before bringing in the younger ones for September.

Tennis Activity
Mr. Nixon will be running this activity on Wednesdays and if anyone wishes to have individual coaching from 4.00 - 5.00 pm please let us know and we will inform him. This will not be possible, however, if it is difficult to collect the children promptly at 5.00 pm.

SECONDARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER, VOL. 3 No. 1, 20th April 2007

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This is a particularly busy term for our upper school students. External examinations have already begun for our year 11 students. The AS and A level examinations start in mid -May. Towards the end of this term, our year 9 students will be sitting their end of Key Stage SATs.

This term we will have social hockey for mums and secondary girls on Fridays starting on 27th April. This will be held from 3pm - 4pm.

Next week activities begin. We also have our first fixture on Thursday. The under 16 boys will play Coast Academy in soccer at home. Parental support is welcome.

Visiting French Students, Steven Kirby

At the end of last term we were lucky enough to be visited by a party from a French school. The school is in France bordering on Spain and in the beautiful Pyrenean mountains. Our guests arrived at the school having only just completed their long journey from Europe. Needless to say, they were very tired and somewhat overwhelmed by the heat and unusual environment but they were nevertheless happy and excited to be in Kenya. Mrs. Dale kindly assisted me in pairing off our guests into their host families.

After some initial shyness, the ice was broken and both sets of students spoke to each other in French and in English. Our guests then returned to their hotel to fetch their belongings for their weekend stay with our students.

With impeccable timing they arrived back at school to see our excellent "Smike" production. Of course, some members of the French party were thrilled when they saw their Kenyan hosts appear on stage.

After the assembly our guests went home with their hosts and enjoyed what turned out to be a very successful and enjoyable weekend. They experienced a slice of life in Kenya and it seems that many lasting friendships have been forged. I am, of course hugely indebted to the host families and can I say a heartfelt "merci beaucoup" to the families of Ida, Neve, Valerie, Tadge, Brenda and Anham.

I look forward to welcoming our guests back soon and am pleased with this link which we now have with the French school.
