PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER, VOL. 1 No. 6, 23rd Febrauary 2007

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Students of the Week

The Students of the Week ending 9th February 2007 were: Emma McLelland & Joy Mugo (Play Group), Anna Maina (Nursery), Alix Keates (Reception), Joanna Dyer (Y1), Jamie Jennings (y2), Jackson Brown (Y3), Dominic Blanchet (Y4), Fergus Leckie (Y5) and Careen Pradhan (Y6). Well done, everyone!

First House Point Certificate
The children were informed at the beginning of term that those who reached 25 house points in one term would receive a special certificate of merit. Our first pupils to reach this commendable target are Hawa Karega and Natasha Neylan in Y1 and Stanley Nokes in Y5. Well done, those three! We hope that others will soon follow their example.

U11 Boys' Hockey
The boys' under 11 hockey team played Aga Khan at home on Thursday 8th February and drew 2-2. Well done, boys!
The results of the under 10 girls' friendly hockey match against Aga Khan (away) yesterday will be reported in next week's newsletter.

Braeburn MIS Hockey Tournament
Next Saturday (3rd March) we will be hosting our Hockey Tournament here. The students involved will be taking letters for their parents if they are involved.

Braeburn Nairobi Invitational Gala
A large number of Primary children will be attending this gala in Nairobi on Monday. They will be travelling up by train on Sunday night and arriving back in Mombasa by train on Tuesday morning. Parents are asked to deliver them to the station on Sunday
evening but they will be collected by the school on Tuesday morning and brought back here (probably between 10.00 and 11.00 am). If parents wish to take them home when they arrive, please pick them up from the school.

Monday's After School Swimming Activity
Because Mr. Farid will not be here on Monday, his Swimming Activities after school will be cancelled. The children affected should go home on the early bus.

Assemblies
We hope you enjoyed our Open Day today and Year 4's assembly. Thank you, Ms. Andrews and Y4. Next week is Year 3's assembly.

Fun Day
Fun Day will take place on Friday 9th March at 3.00 pm until 6.00 pm. THERE WILL BE NO LATE BUS. Children staying must go home with their parents or arrangements should be made for them to go home with someone else and the school informed. From 6.00 - 8.00 pm there will be an International Food Festival in which parents are kindly asked to bring a national dish. Vouchers will be sold at Ksh.100 for a plate of food and the bar will be open. We are also looking for raffle prizes such as a bottle of wine, whiskey etc. Please be generous in support of the PTA which provides the school with so many extras for the benefit of the children.

Change of Boarding Mistress

Sadly, I have to announce that Ms. Kimutai is leaving the Boarding House to spend more time with her family. She has loved the Braeburn "family" but her own must come first and it was a very difficult decision for her to make. The boarders will miss her but her replacement, Ms. Oloo from the Secondary School, will be taking over in April and the boarding children will very quickly warm to her. Ms. Oloo has lead numerous residential trips for the President's Award Scheme and is ideally suited to the position. We wish her every happiness in her new responsibility.

Exam Week
Exam week begins on Monday 5th March. A lot of homework will be revision. Please encourage your child to revise if that is what they have been asked to do.

Tennis Activity
Next term we have a professional tennis coach coming to offer tennis as an activity. Interested children MUST have their own tennis racquets and the cost for the activity will be Ksh1,500 per term. He is also offering individual tennis coaching at Ksh.500 per hour. This will take place after activities from 4.00 pm to 5.00 pm. If your child would like to take up tennis next term, please make sure they have a labeled racquet.

Drums for Peace
The Primary School children have been writing poems for an International Poetry Competition on a theme of peace and non-violence. This is an initiative from Belgium and their poems have been sent to the Mombasa Municipal Education Office where they will be adjudicated. On Wednesday 21st March all the schools involved will beat drums in their compounds during the morning as a show of unity for peace in the world. We are going to make this our "Book Day" and sponsored read for A.C.T.S.

Polio Immunisation
The Ministry of Health has advised all schools that the World Health Organisation (WHO) had recently detected and confirmed a wild polio virus case in Dadaab Refugee Camp in Wajir District of North Eastern Province. To protect children in Kenya the Ministry has been conducting an immunization programme for children under 5 years of age. The Early Years children whose parents had consented were vaccinated on Wednesday and will have their second vaccination between 17th and 21st March.

Have a good weekend.

Yours sincerely

SECONDARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER, VOL. 1 No. 6, 23rd February 2007

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We had one fixture prior to the Half term break. Our under 13 boys were held to a one all draw away at Mombasa Academy.

Swimming Gala

30 of our swimmers are off on Sunday to Nairobi to defend the trophy for the Braeburn Invitational Swimming Gala. They are travelling overnight on the train and will arrive Monday morning to swim during the afternoon and to travel back on the train Monday evening. They are accompanied by Mr. Farid, Mr Gitau and Ms. Chege and a number of parents. We expect the students to return to Mombasa at around 10 am on Tuesday morning. We are aware that many of the students will be tired from the journey. Students can either attend school for the day or be picked up from the school by parents. We wish our team well in their endeavours.

Under 13's Hockey Tournament

Next Saturday, 3rd March, we will host the Under 13's Hockey tournament. Mombasa Academy, Aga Khan Mombasa and Shree have all confirmed their attendance. The teams are expected to arrive at 8.30am for a 9am 'push off'. Parental support would be highly appreciated. We expect the tournament to end at 2.30 pm with the presentation of the trophies. This tournament is a prelude to the Kenton Hockey Festival where our under 11 and below will be well represented later in March.

Professional Tennis Coach

Next term a professional tennis coach will be offering group classes and individual coaching sessions within the school. The group sessions will cost 1500 KSh per term and the individual sessions which will be held after activities will be 500 KSh per hour. It is important that any student interested in this activity acquires a tennis racket.

New Boarding Mistress

Next term, we will have a new Boarding Mistress. Ms. Violaine Oloo will take over the running of the boarding from Ms. Julie Kimutai. Ms. Oloo has been with us as a Geography and Business Studies teacher since Braeburn took over in 2004 and was previously at Braeside in Nairobi. She is an extremely competent teacher and manager with a quiet, gentle but firm personality. Ms. Kimutai has successfully run the boarding house for the last year and is looking forward to spending more time with her family.
