PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER, VOL. 3 No. 2, 27th April 2007

Dear Parents and Guardians,

House Point Certificates
Students of the Week
The first Students of the Week were chosen this week and will be mentioned in next week's newsletter.

Curriculum Overviews

Curriculum overviews detailing the work to be covered this term went out to parents this week.

Sponsored Read for ACTS
We would like to finalise the contributions made to ACTS from the Sponsored Read and hand over the cheque next Friday in assembly. If your child has any money to give in, please send it as soon as possible.

Assemblies
Because this is such a short term, class assemblies started today with Y6 kicking off as usual. Thank you, Y6, and we look forward to seeing Y5 in action next Friday.

Rains
The rains appear to have come at last. It would be wise to give your child an umbrella to bring to school in case they have to travel from one part of the school to another but PLEASE make sure it is labeled.

Tennis Coaching
A number of parents have expressed an interest in having their children coached for tennis from 4.00 - 5.00 pm. If you would like tennis coaching the cost is KES.3,500 per term and it must be on the condition that your child is collected promptly at 5.00 pm. Please contact Nixon on 0722-222795 and make the necessary arrangements.

Scouts Excursion to Shimba Hills
Next Saturday (5th May) the scouts are going to Shimba Hills on a game drive and a hike with a picnic in the bush. The fee of KES.1,300 should have been paid today. A letter detailing times of departure and return from the school will be issued next week and a reminder put in next week's newsletter - I know it will be a very early start in the morning! The scouts now have their uniforms and may wear them to school on Wednesdays.

Y5 Field Trip to Kwale District Eye Centre (by Mrs. Dale)
Firstly, a very big thank you for your generous donations, both financial and also for the contributions to the shop. We raised in excess of Ksh.6,700 (awaiting one more donation) which for a class of 14 children was very impressive. Dr. Helen Roberts passes on her appreciation and thanks to you all.
The trip went very smoothly with no long waits for the ferry. The children were very well behaved and had a most interesting time at the centre. The highlight was probably getting gowned up and watching Dr. Roberts performing an eye operation - removing a cataract and inserting a plastic lens. Minutes later we were able to talk to the patient who assured us he felt nothing! We also learned a lot about the surrounding Kwale district and improved our map work skills.
Some written comments from the children:

Q. What was the most interesting part?
A. The operation because it was cool (Nile)

We saw a film all about the eye centre - how the workers got around the place, when some of the poor people couldn't get to the centre. We even saw an operation. We were very lucky. (Olivia)

Please see the attached account by Stanley Nokes in Y5 and the photographs which were taken while the children were there.

New Buses
You may have noticed that we have three brand new buses! However, I must point out that these are not additions but replacements and the old buses will disappear.

May Day
Just a reminder that Tuesday is a public holiday and the school will be closed.

Have a good weekend.
