PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER, VOL. 1 No. 8, 3rd November 2006

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The Students of the Week ending 27th October were: Serhij Kryuskyy (Play Group), Kirstie Gitau (Nursery), Joel Shakue (Reception), Farha Omar (Y1), Imtiaz Pradhan (Y2), Wairimu Maina (Y3), Mischelle Sosafio (Y4), Selina Hassler (Y5) and David Boulton (Y6). Well done everyone!

In the Under 11 Girls' Rounders match against Aga Khan last Thursday (26th October), the report was as follows:
Ode to Second Base
We can run and we can catch, Whack the wall - rounders to snatch!
We're great at practice, but sad to say, We couldn't quite do it in the match!

We played the AKA last week, A narrow win for them to sneak.
We've beaten Shree, but in this case, It all went wrong at second base.

In that match ( 26th Oct), We were fielding - they had their hits.
We too often heard the sound of, "Safe at second - half a rounder!"

But some of us are just year three, Come year six, what champs we'll be!
More games to play, more balls to chase, And sharper throws to second base.

Eyes on the ball and sound decisions, Stopping half rounders will be a feature,
And during practice and PE lessons, We might just listen to our teachers!
(This delightful report was kindly provided by the team's coach, Mrs. N. Gicheru.)

The Under 11 Boys' Cricket match against Shree last Thursday was also narrowly lost.
This is the report by David Boulton (Y6): On Thursday 26th October we went to Shree for an U11 cricket match. We won the toss and decided to bat first. Our opening batsman smacked a few fours but I don't think there were any sixes. We wanted every player to bat so our opening batsmen retired and we scored 51 runs.
When Shree batted, their opening batsmen were very careful about being caught out. Our bowling was still quite poor which gave Shree a fair few runs. When there were two overs left, Shree finished off by smacking one last four making their score 53-0, passing our score by two runs. Wish us more luck in our next match.

Yesterday the Under 11 Rounders team played Aga Khan while the Under 11 Cricket team played Mombasa Academy. Results next week.

Tomorrow we wish our young swimmers every success in the Coast Junior Swimming Championships at Oshwal.

A message from Mrs. Dale:
All of Year 6 and a group from Year 4 had a very enjoyable afternoon last Wednesday (25th October). This was part of their R.E. work. Year 6 are learning about festivals and Year 4 have been learning about Hinduism. Mrs. Dhutia kindly joined us and demonstrated how to make a Rangoli pattern on the veranda outside Y4 classroom. The children participated and also made their own patterns using brightly coloured rice. The results were very spectacular. During their numeracy lesson on Monday, Y6 made their designs using the concepts of reflective and rotational symmetry. I know the children benefited from the whole experience, not only increasing their knowledge and art skills, but also by learning how to work as a team. They were very proud of their efforts.

Thank you, Y2, for your lovely assembly. Next week is Y1's turn.

We hold our November Fest Fun Day this afternoon from 3.30 - 6.30 and hope to see you all there. Special thanks must go to the teachers for running the stores and competitions and, particularly, Mrs Jiwaji and Mrs Sassoon for organizing it all with the help of Mrs. Rossella Soares.

Poppies for Remembrance Day (Sunday 12th November) are available in our school office. Your contribution for a poppy will go to the War Graves Commission of Kenya for the upkeep of the graves of those who fell in the last two world wars.

Mr. Gannaway had a successful operation last week and is recovering well. We look forward to seeing him back in Mombasa soon.

Have a good weekend.

Yours sincerely

SECONDARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER, VOL. 1 No. 8, 3rd November 2006

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The school has been asked by the Royal British Legion to be part of their 'Poppy Appeal'. The 'Poppy Appeal' is a charity providing financial, social and emotional support to ex-service men and their dependents. The Kenyan appeal focuses on the Kenyan servicemen who fought in the Second World War. Some of the most devastating battles in the First World War occurred in the Flanders and Picardy regions of Belgium and Northern France. The poppy was the only thing which grew in the aftermath of the battles. The poppy appeal is inspired by a poem by a Canadian doctor who served there called In Flanders' Fields. On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918, the First World War ended. The nearest Sunday to this day is Remembrance Sunday, where we remember all that have been affected by war. The giving of paper poppies for a small donation before this date has become a tradition. Poppies are available from the school office.

Next week we are sending students to Nairobi to compete in both under 13s Rounders tournament to be held at Hillcrest School and the National Age Group Swimming Championships held at Kasarani. The students will be accommodated at Braeburn College. We wish them all the best in their fixtures and events.

Mr. Gannaway has now had his operation and is recovering in India. He is in good spirits and looking forward to his return to Kenya.

A big thank you to the staff and the PTA for organising tonight's November festival.

A big thank you to all the parents who have signed up to receive this newsletter by email. If you would also like to receive this newsletter by email, thereby conserving paper and helping our school to become more environmentally friendly; please send an email request to mis@africaonline.co.ke

Have a lovely weekend.
