PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER, VOL. 1 No. 6, 6th October 2006

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The Students of the Week ending 29th September 2006 were: Kim Onyango (Playgroup),
Jade Schollinger (Nursery), Merlin Bosse (Reception), Natasha Neylan (Y1), Thomas Haller (Y2), Tawhida Omar (Y3), Dominic Blanchet (Y4), Eric Hoskins (Y5) and Alex Galimberti (Y6). Well done, everyone!

The Inter-House Swimming Gala held on Tuesday was won by Chui in a very close competition. All three houses did extremely well but congratulations to Chui and many thanks to the teachers who organized it, the PTA and parents for providing the bake sale and the students for their competitive spirit.

We wish every success to the children taking part in the National Age Group Championship Gala at Aga Khan on Saturday.

The Under 9 Rounders team played Shree away yesterday. I will publish the score in next week's newsletter.

Thank you, Y5, for your assembly. Next week is Y4's turn.

The informal concert scheduled for Wednesday 11th October has been postponed and after school activities will be as normal.

Next Thursday (12th October) is World Sight Day and we would like to bring this to the attention of the children. There will be a special assembly attended by a visitor from the Kwale Eye Centre who will give the children some facts about how they restore sight to the blind and raise the children's awareness of how precious sight is and how fortunate we are to have it. It will be a non-uniform day for the Primary School with a Ksh.50 collection for those who don't wear uniform. This money will go to the Kwale Eye Centre to assist them in the wonderful work they do for the blind in Kenya. If you would like to contribute more than Ksh.50 you will be most welcome.

I would like to remind you that Tuesday 10th October is a Public Holiday (Moi Day). Parents of boarders may find this day difficult and may prefer not to send their children to school on Monday. If this is the case, please advise Ms. Kimutai on Saturday and let her know in advance if she has not already spoken to you.

Special Notice: Yesterday your children were introduced to "Story Box" (Age 3-6), "Adventure Box" (Age 6-9) and "Discovery Box" (Age 9-12) from Bayard Children's Magazines. There is a carefully planned educational element in the content of each magazine which will help develop children's reading skills, teach them new knowledge and broaden their horizons. There are three magazines in each issue and the publications (10 issues every
year) include the works of many top authors and illustrators. They are sold on a subscription basis and are posted directly to subscribers' homes. If parents wish to subscribe they would be able to benefit from a special school discounted subscription rate of  63 instead of the standard rate of  70. Furthermore, the school would benefit from free subscriptions to put magazines in the library and in classrooms. Attached to this newsletter is the subscription form. Please remember to state which magazine you would be interested in subscribing to. The form should then be returned to the school with a CHEQUE made payable to BAYARD by 31st October 2006. If you would like to see a sample of these magazines first, please ask your child's Class Teacher to show them to you. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO TAKE THEM AWAY.

Have a good weekend,

SECONDARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER, VOL. 1 No. 6, 6th October 2006

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This week we held our Inter-house Swimming Gala. I was particularly pleased with the number of students participating and the quality of the swimming. In a closely fought competition that could have been won by any house prior to the final two races, Chui became victorious. I would like to thank all of the swimmers, the house captains, the teachers, the officials, the PTA and the parents for making it a day to remember.

We have elected a new prefects body from years 12 and 13. They help out around the school, particularly at school events and take on the challenges of leadership. Our prefects are Bansre, Sawako, Natalie, Oliver, Cynthia and Anita. The prefects also choose a head prefect and deputy from themselves. The Head prefect for this academic year is Natalie, deputy head prefect is Bansre.

The PE department intends to take our under 13 Rounder team to a Nairobi tournament in November. As usual, a bus and accommodation will be provided by the school. However, a number of parents have suggested that the students would prefer to go by aeroplane. Unfortunately, as a school, we are unable to meet the cost of this. However, the PE department would like to know if any sponsorship by companies and/ or individuals is available to aid this trip.

Just a quick reminder, Tuesday 10th October is a national holiday.

We have our secondary school parents next Wednesday. This will run from 3 pm until 5 pm in the long room. We will be operating a first-come-first-served system due to the number of subject teachers in the secondary.

The Inter House Swimming competition will be held on Tuesday of next week from 8.30am until lunchtime. This will involved students from year 1 up to year 13. Parental support will be appreciated.

Mrs. Jennings would like any old magazines and cardboard boxes for the Art Department.

The following passages are reports compiled by students and teachers on clubs, sports and activities.

Cricket report,
There appears to be considerable cause for optimism this term in regard to standard of cricket being played at the school. Firstly, the under 11 team, coached by Mr. Dale, have already shown a marked improvement on last season. We also have a number of talented cricketers in the under 13 side and the open side. By R. Daniels

Under 11 cricket match against Aga Khan played at home,
Aga Khan 54 runs BMIS 43 runs all out
On Thursday 21st September Aga Khan came for the under 11 cricket match. Aga Khan as guests decided to bat first. There was some good bowling from our bowlers but there is room for improvement and Aga Khan team scored quite a few fours but no sixes.
Our opening batsmen did well and scored a fair few runs with a couple of fours. Unfortunately Aga Khan bowlers were very accurate and successfully bowled and caught out our team.
We look forward to our next under 11 match against Shree and hope to be the winning team. By David Boulton, y6

Rounders report,
The under 16 girls rounders team have started the term in flying form. Their first match against Mombasa Academy has shown they are starting as they mean to carry on. Winning 4 -3 in a tightly fought game the under 16 are in the running to win the league trophy. By Ms. Andrews

Rounders report- Braeburn's Broadsides skuttle Shree,
After a shaky start against a more mature Mombasa Academy side, our under 11 rounders team had been absorbing top tips from their friends higher up in the school. While the first match on Thursday 21st. September showed up their inexperience against MA; the same team
played Shree on Tuesday 26th. With confident batting, sensible fielding and greater tactical awareness.
Yvonne and Christine scored sensational rounders, ably assisted by valuable half rounders from Kylie, Olivia and Careena. Shree girls put up a valiant defence during the second innings but it was not enough leaving BMIS victorious with 7 rounders compared to 4 1/2 . By Mrs Gicheru

Cross Country activity,
On the whole I am pleased with the general improvement of the group. The students are now able to run for longer and they are beginning to gain a team mentality. To enhance things further can I please urge parents to urge children to do at least one run per week. I am grateful to Mr. Hill for his support to this activity. Indeed, the last occasion, his choice of sunglasses caused much amusement. By Mr. Kirby
