PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER, VOL. 1 No. 5, 9th Febrauary 2007

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Students of the Week
The Students of the Week ending 2nd February 2007 were: Glen Jorgensen (Play Group), Ben Clarke (Nursery), James Stokes (Reception), Yuri Hoste (Y1), Anyango Blanchet (Y2), Wairimu Maina (Y3), Petro Kombe (Y4), Nile MacDonald (Y5)and Kyle Spencer (Y6). Well done, everyone!

U11 Boys Hockey
Our U11 boys won their hockey match against Mombasa Academy at home on Tuesday with a good score of 4-2. Well done, boys! I will give you the results of yesterdays match against Aga Khan at home in the next news letter.

Swimming Gala
The Inter-House Swimming Gala held on Monday was won by Simba with Kifaru in second place. It was a fast moving and well swum gala with lots of team spirit from the competitors.
I would like to thank Mr. Farid, Mrs. Jennings and Mr. Gitau for organizing it so well.

Class Trips
Last Thursday Y3 represented us at Florist Academy when the ACTS books were given to the school. Their behaviour was absolutely exemplary! In the Good Work Assembly on Wednesday they shared their experiences with the rest of the school and impressed us yet again. On Tuesday the Reception Class will be going to Haller Park and we wish them and their teachers a good trip.

Open Day
We will be holding our Open Day for parents and visitors to come round the school and see what goes on during the day on Friday 23rd February from 8.00 am to 12.00 pm. There will be benches inside the doors of classrooms for visitors to observe lessons but we ask that these lessons are not interrupted in any way. Friends and visitors from outside BMIS will be most welcome.

Assemblies
Thank you, Year 5, for your lovely assembly. Year 4's assembly will be on Open Day. They should have a big audience!

Fun Day
Thinking in advance, we need a PTA meeting to discuss and organise a Fun Day for this term. During informal discussions an idea has been raised to have it after the Primary exam week which is from 5th - 9th March and that it should be held on a Friday from 3pm - 6pm with, perhaps an International Food Festival afterwards. This would mean parents from different countries bringing in their national dishes which everyone can sample (for a price, of course!) to raise funds for the PTA.. Our own kitchen could provide chips etc. during the Fun Day but the Food Festival would be a following event in the evening along with a bar. It's just an idea at the moment but it seems like a very good one.

Chicken Pox
Although a letter went out on Wednesday, just a reminder that we have had a few cases of chicken pox this term in the Primary School and I would ask parents to be particularly vigilant about this. While it is far better to get chicken pox as a child than shingles as an adult, there are adults around who have not had chicken pox and who would rather not get it! Please keep your children at home if they are feeling unwell.

Half Term
Next week is a very short one as we break for half term from Wednesday to Friday. Activities on Monday and Tuesday will be as normal.

Have a good weekend.

Yours sincerely

Allen Corbet

REPORT ON THE VERSE SPEAKING COMPETITION TRIP, Mr. B. Gannon

The three BMIS contestants for the Nairobi Academy annual verse speaking competition were Kiella Nicholas, Anham Salyani and Sharifa Zarnack. They were accompanied by Mr. Gannon.

The competition started at 10.00 am, February 3rd. The three BMIS contenders attended the primary schools presentation in which students as young as seven years old delivered their poems effectively. These young students' courage and confidence inspired our students, especially as Braeburn Nairobi Primary came second among the dozen or more schools from all over the country.

In the afternoon it was our turn to compete. Kiella Nicholas presented a moving rendition of "Warming" by Jenny Joseph, bringing out the humour of the poem. Anham Salyani in the under 16 category performed the dramatic anti-war poem, Wilfred Owen's "Dulce et Decorum Est", with competent ease. She also presented her own original poem for the talent category of the competition.

In the under 18 group Sharifa Zarnack presented "Argument with God" by Y.S Chemba. Her voice control and style of presentation was a match for the very stiff competition from the Brook House team, who were the eventual winners. Sharifa also presented her original poem in the talent category.

Although BMIS students did not win a trophy or prize, they were indeed winners for their determination, effort and courage. The journey was long and arduous, but the rewarding experience that boosted the confidence and self esteem of the contestants was worth it.
Thanks to Braeburn College Nairobi boarding staff who so kindly hosted BMIS students, they made us feel welcome and took care of our transport, lodging and food with unstinting generosity.

Tsavo Trip, Veronique Jennings

I would like to thank the parents who gave their children the great opportunity to go on the Tsavo Trip last weekend. We all had a fabulous time filled with adventures. We were lucky enough to spot 11 lions as the grounds are very green. I am sure that your children have filled you in with all their stories.
A CD with all the trips pictures will be handed out next week.
