REPORT
ON THE VERSE SPEAKING COMPETITION TRIP, Mr. B. Gannon
The
three BMIS contestants for the Nairobi Academy annual verse speaking
competition were Kiella Nicholas, Anham Salyani and Sharifa Zarnack.
They were accompanied by Mr. Gannon.
The
competition started at 10.00 am, February 3rd. The three BMIS contenders
attended the primary schools presentation in which students as young
as seven years old delivered their poems effectively. These young
students' courage and confidence inspired our students, especially
as Braeburn Nairobi Primary came second among the dozen or more
schools from all over the country.
In
the afternoon it was our turn to compete. Kiella Nicholas presented
a moving rendition of "Warming" by Jenny Joseph, bringing
out the humour of the poem. Anham Salyani in the under 16 category
performed the dramatic anti-war poem, Wilfred Owen's "Dulce
et Decorum Est", with competent ease. She also presented her
own original poem for the talent category of the competition.
In
the under 18 group Sharifa Zarnack presented "Argument with
God" by Y.S Chemba. Her voice control and style of presentation
was a match for the very stiff competition from the Brook House
team, who were the eventual winners. Sharifa also presented her
original poem in the talent category.
Although BMIS students did not win a trophy or prize, they were
indeed winners for their determination, effort and courage. The
journey was long and arduous, but the rewarding experience that
boosted the confidence and self esteem of the contestants was worth
it.
Thanks to Braeburn College Nairobi boarding staff who so kindly
hosted BMIS students, they made us feel welcome and took care of
our transport, lodging and food with unstinting generosity.
Tsavo
Trip, Veronique Jennings
I would
like to thank the parents who gave their children the great opportunity
to go on the Tsavo Trip last weekend. We all had a fabulous time
filled with adventures. We were lucky enough to spot 11 lions as
the grounds are very green. I am sure that your children have filled
you in with all their stories.
A CD with all the trips pictures will be handed out next week.
