| Braeburn School Arusha - Who are we? |
|
Braeburn
School is staffed by a team of well-trained and highly qualified teachers
and assistants. The majority of our teachers trained in the UK and have
considerable experience of teaching the British National Curriculum. The
school has excellent facilities for the delivery of the British National
Curriculum, including: ·
two libraries Textbooks
and stationery are provided and books for reference, study or for personal
reading can be borrowed from the libraries. There
is a pleasant dining area and students have the choice of taking school
meals or bringing a packed-lunch. British
education enjoys a reputation for unsurpassed quality throughout the world.
The emphasis is on how to think, not what to think and great importance
is placed on the students’ ability to work independently and develop their
own thinking. The
National Curriculum sets out a clear and full entitlement to learning
for all pupils. It determines
the content of what will be taught, and sets attainment targets for learning.
The National Curriculum gives teachers, pupils, parents, employers and
the wider community a clear and shared understanding of the skills and
knowledge that pupils will gain at school. The
National Curriculum is organised on the basis of an Early Years Stage
and five other Key stages.
Standard
assessments are carried out at the end of each Key Stage, which are common
to all schools in the UK. Attainment is measured using level descriptors
and attainment targets which set out the knowledge, skills and understanding
that each pupil is expected to have by the end of each Key Stage. Further
details can be obtained from the National Curriculum website www.nc.uk.net
enabling students, parents and future teachers to find out exactly what
skills and knowledge have been acquired by the student.
Students can opt for full-time, weekly or daily boarding. The school boasts excellent separate boarding facilities for boys and girls. There is a kitchen where breakfast and dinner are provided, also allowing students to prepare snacks and drinks. All bedding is provided and laundry is done daily. School transport is arranged at the beginning and end of the each day. Each wing has live-in house parents who provide care and supervision overnight. The boarding facility is also covered by 24-hour medical service for more serious medical problems. A senior hostel warden oversees all aspects of accommodation. The boarding staff encourage a friendly and supportive atmosphere where students are happy and can develop study skills. At
Braeburn School Arusha, we welcome pupils from many different countries
and cultures. These pupils usually settle into the school quickly and
without difficulty. Occasionally, however, a child may experience difficulties
because of a lack of English, or because of specific learning difficulties
such as Dyslexia. The Learning Support Department is in place to ensure
that these pupils receive the help they need in order to achieve their
full potential throughout their school career. Pupils may be referred
to the department by either parents or teachers. Teachers
with expertise in English as a Second Language, and Special Educational
Needs, are available throughout the school to give intensive support,
or general in-class support as necessary. Parents are encouraged to work
with the department, and are kept informed of their child’s progress through
regular reports. Where
necessary, specialists from outside the school, such as Educational Psychologists,
Speech Therapists and Counsellors can be called upon to help with specific
pupils. Braeburn
School Arusha provides a friendly and caring environment for our students.
Students can turn to any member of staff if they have any problem or concern.
There are also systems in place that allow the school to keep a close
eye on each student’s development. We
strongly believe that positive attitudes create the best discipline. When
students feel they are respected, they will tend to respect others. Students
are praised on their successes of any nature on a regular basis and our
annual Speech Day and Prize Giving allows parents and students to celebrate
achievements. Students
at Braeburn are given the opportunity to play sport both socially and
in competitive fixtures. Students can take part in a wide range of sporting
clubs that are run on a “sport for all” basis while our more serious athletes
take part in additional coaching sessions. Braeburn
School has been the driving force behind the establishment of an Arusha
School Sports League and through this league we have boys’ and girls’
teams competing in a range of sports. Braeburn
School also takes part in a number of national sporting events and, through
contact with our sister schools, we also compete in international tournaments
in Nairobi. The
Dragon Award is based on the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme and progresses
from the Bronze, through to the Silver and Gold Awards. The Scheme aims
to provide an enjoyable, challenging and rewarding programme of personal
development, which is of the highest quality and the widest reach. The
Dragon Award sets out to challenge young people to serve others, acquire
skills and experience adventure. The
aim of the Service Section is to encourage service to individuals, the
School and the wider community. The
Skill section inspires the discovery and development of personal interests
and fosters social and practical skills. This wide-ranging programme is
designed to establish a lasting active lifestyle and to provide an enduring
sense of achievement. The
Expeditions section inspires a spirit of adventure and discovery and provides
an opportunity for students to develop self-reliance, leadership skills
and teamwork. Most of the Expedition Programme takes place on either Mount
Meru or Mount Kilimanjaro. Drama
at Braeburn is characterised by the variety of opportunities available.
Whether it is a starring role in a major production or helping to create
scenery for a performance there is something for everybody. In the recent
past some of the productions we have staged include Shakespeare Under
the Stars, Odd Job Joan, Early Years and Primary Christmas productions,
Charley and the Chocolate Factory, Bugsy Malone and Scrooge. All
students are encouraged to develop their musical talents and interests.
Students have the opportunity of making music individually and as part
of an ensemble. The Music department organises choirs for a range of age
groups, supplies the music for productions and provides individual tuition
on a range of instruments. From
Year 4 students are required to take part in after-school clubs on at
least one afternoon per week for an hour. Students are given a wide range
of activities to choose from, which will include sports, drama, and music
but will also include activities such as chess, gardening, cookery, art,
wildlife club etc. Students are encouraged to take a variety of clubs
throughout the year and clubs change termly. Parents
are informed of school policy, curriculum development and forthcoming
school events through regular newsletters. The
academic progress of students is constantly monitored and there are regular
reports and parents meetings. While the reports and parents’ meetings
provide a formal opportunity to report on students’ progress, parents
and guardians are welcome to contact the school at any time if they have
a concern or wish to ask about anything. Initially, the school should
be contacted either by telephone or by putting a note in the student’s
diary. The form tutor checks the diary and we ask that parents also read
and sign it. The
school emphasizes the importance of close communication between the teacher
or guardian and student. 0ur
school nurse provides First Aid for minor ‘injuries’, administers prescribed
medicines and accompanies any child who needs medical attention to their
local doctor. Braeburn
School, Arusha is an International School and has no specific religious
affiliation. However, we strongly believe in respecting the beliefs and
customs of all our students. The
“pursuit of excellence” extends beyond the classroom and all students
are encouraged to develop their talents and learn new skills in our extensive
extra-curricular programme. To apply for admission, please feel free to visit our downloadable application form, complete and return it to the Head Teacher together with previous school records and/or examination results, a birth certificate and a passport photograph. We will then contact you. Whenever possible we would welcome the opportunity to show you around the school, discuss your child’s admission in person, and meet your child.
