“Enabling
children to take an active part in their own learning” The
Primary School provides a stimulating learning environment which is bright,
colourful and well-resourced. It offers structured opportunities for academic,
physical and social development whilst encouraging children to become
independent and take responsibility for their own learning. The children
benefit from being taught in small classes where they are supported by
experienced teachers and classroom assistants. Throughout
the Primary School, pupils study a full range of subjects including Literacy,
Numeracy, Science, History, Geography, Art and Craft, PSHE, RE and IT.
In addition they receive specialist lessons in French, Kiswahili, Music
and PE. Literacy,
Numeracy and Science are core subjects within the National Curriculum. We
consider a good command of the English language to be central to the whole
process of education, communication and future exam success. The teaching
of phonics and reading has a high priority and our daily Literacy Hour,
for all classes, provides opportunities to develop language through reading,
writing, speaking and listening. The
Numeracy Hour encourages all pupils to understand the relevance of mathematics
to everyday life. Practical investigation and a process of enquiry promote
mathematics as a useful tool in a wide range of activities. Mental agility
with numbers is encouraged and a solid foundation is laid for this subject,
which will remain significant throughout a pupil’s school career. Science
is also central to the curriculum and we aim to build on the pupils’ natural
curiosity about the world around them. They are enabled to find out about
themselves and investigate how things in our everyday life work. They
begin to develop scientific skills and understanding, which they will
go on to use in the Secondary School. Throughout
the Primary School, pupils develop knowledge, understanding and skills
related to all subjects through the thematic study of Termly Topics. Children
enter Key Stage 1 when they start Year 1 at age five. During the first
two years in Primary they build on the skills they will have developed
during the Foundation Stage in Nursery and Reception. It
is still important for pupils to have the opportunity to ‘play’ and careful
planning ensures that they are provided with stimulating, practical activities,
which lay the foundations of key concepts and social skills. At
the end of Year 2, when most pupils are seven years old, they undergo
an informal series of Statutory Attainment Tests (SATs), which establish
their level of attainment relative to other children being educated within
the same system. Children
enter Key Stage 2 when they join Year 3. Lessons become less ‘play’ orientated,
and over the next four years they work towards their Key Stage 2 SATs
which they sit at the end of Year 6. They
increasingly take more responsibility, are expected to set an example
to the younger pupils and in their final year act as Monitors, supervising
daily routine within the Primary School. Behaviour
Policy within the Primary School is based on Positive Reinforcement. Our
philosophy is based on care and respect for self, others and the environment;
and the children are generally proud of their school and their personal
achievements. Behaviour is good and disciplinary sanctions only occasionally
need to be imposed. Click here to visit the Early Years prospectus. |
