ABOUT BRAEBURN COLLEGE

Braeburn College is a co-educational international 6th form College offering both day and residential places. It runs courses for a wide range of international examination bodies:

  • Cambridge International Examinations
  • The International Baccalaureate Organisation
  • Edexcel International (London Examinations)
  • BTEC

The College is situated on a landscaped 25-acre campus in the peaceful Garden Estate locality 8 km from Nairobi city centre. This site has been used by Braeburn High School since 1982. In 2003 the decision was made to dedicate this campus to the needs of College students only. For day students transport is available three times a day. In line with colleges and universities throughout the world, the College does not have a uniform.

ETHOS

Braeburn College is a bridge between school and university. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own development and emphasis is placed on the importance of self-discipline and good study skills. Both learning and personal development are aided by the fact that work is carried out in an environment where staff and students treat each other with respect.

FACILITIES

The College is very well equipped to deliver the wide range of courses on offer, with the following facilities:
· 5 specialist science laboratories
· 2 art and design technology studios
· A technology workshop
· An IT room
· A spacious well resourced computer media centre / library
· A DVD, video and data projector room
· Computers throughout the college connected to internet

In keeping with the College atmosphere there is also a coffee shop selling light snacks, serving as an informal meeting place for students and staff. This is open throughout the day, and for main meals the cafeteria overlooking a lake is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The coffee shop and cafeteria operate on a pay-as-you eat system.

RESIDENTIAL FACILITIES

Students can opt for full-time, weekly or daily boarding. The College boasts excellent facilities for accommodating up to 200 students. The main hostel is a large, modern building with male and female wings on either side of a communal administration and common-room area. Each student has a single study-bedroom. There is a kitchen in each of the living wings allowing students to prepare coffee and snacks. All bedding is provided and laundry is done daily. The hostel has three televisions with video and DSTV provision (viewing times are monitored by staff) and there are computers with internet and e-mail access.

Each wing of the hostel has live-in house parents and a nurse on duty 24 hours a day. The College is also registered with the AAR 24-hour ambulance service for more serious medical problems. A senior hostel warden oversees all aspects of accommodation.

The boarding staff encourage a friendly and supportive atmosphere where students are happy and can develop study skills. The College library and media centre is open every evening for study and the College sports facilities are available during leisure times.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES AND TRIPS

The College encourages all students to involve themselves in extra-curricular activities and it offers a wide range of opportunities for students to learn new skills and develop the ability to work as a team and take on leadership roles. These are valuable for the students and are sought after by universities.

The College also offers a wide variety of clubs covering sports, dance, drama, Model United Nations, President's Award, photography, community service and 'survival' cookery (for students about to venture into self-catering).

Trips are organised throughout the year. Some of these are academic in nature while others involve camping weekends and 'challenge' activities.
