PROSPECTUS

CHALLENGING PUPILS, ENHANCING LIVES

Founded in 1982, Braeburn High School is a co-educational International Secondary School following the British National Curriculum.

We provide education for pupils in Years 9 to 11 where the age range is from 13 to 16 years. Pupils are prepared for International General Certificate of Secondary Education examinations (IGCSE), run by the Cambridge International Examinations Board.

Braeburn High School prides itself on having a warm, friendly and caring atmosphere combined with high standards of discipline, providing an environment conducive to good learning.

The School's aim is to allow all pupils to fulfil their academic potential, while at the same time developing the social skills needed to enable them to meet the challenges of our global society.

Our multi-cultural nature is a distinct advantage in achieving this goal.

The High School is situated adjacent to our Primary School at an ideal location in Lavington, a leafy residential suburb of Nairobi. Braeburn High is a day school with an extensive and reliable school transport system.

Braeburn High School moved site in September 2003, so all the buildings are new.

  • Spacious library with ICT provision and Internet connection
  • Music suite
  • Drama room plus access to two theatres on site (400 and 114 seats)
  • SEN (Special Education Needs) room
  • Careers Room

Text books and stationery are provided.

Pupils have the option of taking school meals or bringing a packed-lunch. The School tuck-shop sells snacks and drinks at break, lunchtime and after school.

CURRICULUM

Class sizes normally range from 10 to 20 pupils, up to a maximum of 24.

Braeburn High School has three Year groups. In Year 9, pupils complete Key Stage Three of the British National Curriculum. A wide range of subjects is studied, facilitating the development of skills and allowing identification of the strengths of individual pupils. The course culminates in Standard Attainment Tests (SATs) taken in English, Mathematics and Science.

In Years 10 and 11, pupils study an average of nine subjects leading to the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) examinations run by Cambridge International Examinations Board. English Language, English Literature and Mathematics are compulsory.
The other six subjects are selected towards the end of Year 9.

The range of subjects available is wider than at Key Stage Three, so pupils are given assistance in choosing the six optional subjects. This includes: introductory lessons to subjects not taught in Year 9, a 'Careers Evening' at which representatives of between 60 and 80 professions are available for consultation and an Options Evening during which parents and pupils can discuss subjects with staff.

The subjects offered for study at IGCSE include:-

* English language * Geography
* English literature * History
* French * Sociology
* Kiswahili * Art
* Mathematics * Design/technology
* Physics * Drama
* Chemistry * Business studies
* Biology * Information Technology
* Physical Education * Music
* Accounting

Coursework is an integral part of IGCSE work in some subjects. This enables pupils to gain credit for skills shown outside the examination room. Field trips enhance learning in several subjects.

Very able pupils take accelerated courses leading to IGCSE examinations in some subjects at the end of Year 10, or earlier.

Additional learning or language support is available for those who require it.

GUIDANCE FOR FURTHER EDUCATION

This underpins our activities in all years. A Careers' Counsellor is always available for advice and guidance. A 'Careers Evening' is held annually and is open to all pupils. In Year 10, pupils job-shadow a professional of their choice from the Nairobi community for three days during their Work Experience placement. In Year 11, pupils are given information about the different routes to university, or are given assistance to find vocational placements.
