PROSPECTUS... more about BMIS

SPORTS

Students are given the opportunity to play sport both socially and in competitive fixtures. Students can take part in a wide range of sporting activities that are run on a "sport for all" basis while our more serious athletes take part in additional coaching sessions.

The School has tennis and basketball courts, and with its magnificent playing fields offers field games such as hockey, rugby, rounders, netball and football.

Mombasa International School also takes part in a number of national sporting events and, through contact with our sister schools, we also compete in international tournaments in Nairobi.

SWIMMING

Being situated on a tropical coast has its obvious advantages; the warm temperatures guarantee year-round swimming, and students are given swimming instruction from a very early age.

The School's 25m pool is built to international standards, and our swimming teams are highly ranked in the inter-schools swimming galas. Synchronised swimming, competition swimming or just swimming for recreation are all enjoyed at Mombasa International School.

The pool area is also used for school social functions, family get-togethers and weekend fun.

LEARNING SUPPORT

All teachers provide for a range of needs in their classrooms. We are particularly concerned with the two ends of special needs continuum - the less able and the more able child. To help our class teachers provide for differing needs within an individual class, we have a learning support team that works with individual children or small groups within a class or year group. Parents are encouraged to work with the department, and are kept informed of their child's progress through regular reports.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Our lunchtime and after school activities vary seasonally and cover a wide range of sporting, musical and creative activities.

Some activities involve weekend commitments, Sports and Swimming fixtures and Outdoor Education.

We take children out on educational visits as part and parcel of their work. These are not optional and are an integral part of the children's learning.

HOME-SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS

Parents are important people at Mombasa International School. We actively encourage an open and honest home-school partnership. As parents, we expect you to have high expectations of us and equally, we have high expectations of you.

Apart from parent-teacher interviews, we also arrange curriculum evenings throughout the year explaining aspects of our curriculum.

Through our newsletters, we also explain our policies and keep parents informed of curriculum developments as they happen.

TRANSPORT

Children travel to school by car or may take advantage of one of our Safety Buses, which follow predetermined routes according to requirements.

When we have after school activities, we offer a late bus service with a limited route.

HEALTH & SAFETY

Our School Nurse provides first aid for minor injuries and takes responsibility for administering prescribed medicines. The School is covered by medical insurance for school trips, both local and farther afield.

ETHOS

Our school is a community and we recognize that each individual is important and has a valuable contribution to make towards the quality of life enjoyed by the people within it.

We continually stress the importance of honesty, trust, fairness and self-discipline, mutual respect and self-esteem.

We endeavour to encourage and praise good behaviour and help all children to appreciate that this is the normal expectation.
