The
school is run by a headteacher and two deputies, one academic,
one pastoral. Each yeargroup is headed by a co-ordinator. There are also
subject co-ordinators. Teachers are required to be on duty the week before
term starts, as many teacher insets and meetings happen during this week.
New teachers are advised on curriculum matters directly by their yeargroup
co-ordinator. The
academic year is split into three terms of 14, 12 and 10 weeks,
divided by the Christmas holidays (4 weeks), Easter holidays (4 weeks)
and the summer holiday (8/9 weeks). Half term is 10 days in the first
term, three days added to a weekend in the second term and two days added
to a weekend in the third term (see individual school calendars for exact
dates). School
hours are from 7.45 am to 4.15 pm weekdays, athough some teachers
may be required for extra-curricular activities / clubs / sports late
on weekdays and on some weekends. The
school day is divided into 30-minute lessons, starting at 8.10
am and ending at 3.30 pm, with a 15-minute break in the morning and a
55-minute break at lunchtime. Paying and non-paying extra-curricular activities
are held each day from 3.45pm to 4.45pm. There is no school on Saturdays
or Sundays. Teachers
are required to assist with extra-curricular activities / teams
for two terms out of the three. Many teachers choose to do more, however,
as these activities are very enjoyable. There
is a teacher's staff room with individual pigeonholes for teacher
information and where teachers can spend their free time. Teachers
have access to the school computers situated in the ICT suites
and the library when these are not being used by the children for lessons
/ study periods. Teachers'
lunches are provided during term time, and as such lunch can be
taken in the main school dining room. There is also a paying coffee shop
which provides a simple menu and snacks. For sports, music and language (French) teachers, there are subject-specific offices for teachers' use. TEACHER
CONTRACTS and SALARIES Contracts
are given for 24 months, starting on 16th August and up to 15th August.
Specific terms and conditions are given in each contract. In case of any
queries on your contract, please refer directly to the Headteacher. Teachers
with children may be entitled to subsidized tuition for their children,
however student lunch, bus, extra-curricular activities and clubs are
not subsidized. School fees will be either deducted directly from the
teacher's salary, or can be paid monthly on termly by the teacher in question.
The company
pays salaries in arrears at the end of each calendar month directly into
employee bank accounts. Employees are requested to let the company have
all details concerning bank accounts as soon as possible. The Kenya Government deducts taxation, National Social Security Fund (NSSF) and National Hospital Insurance Fund (NSSF) from all persons employed in Kenya. Income tax is also deducted from teachers' salaries. More information on Taxation is available from the Kenya Revenue Authority website. All persons
employed in Kenya must be either citizens of Kenya or must have a legal
valid work permit or pass. Braeburn will ensure that all permits are obtained
before the teacher's contract begins. More information on general immigration
permits is available from the Department
of immigration of Kenya website. The company offers a provident fund which employees can take part in, where a percentage is taken on a monthly basis and returned at the end of the employee's contract. TEACHERS'
ACCOMMODATION and more Across the
road from the school are the school apartments. Electricity (metered),
water, security and maintenance are provided, for a reasonable monthly
service charge. The apartments have one, two or three bedrooms. (see
sample photo gallery here) Each apartment
has a fitted kitchen with fridge-freezer, cooker, basic utensils (sets
of four glasses, plates, dishes and cutlery, wooden spoons etc. and a
kettle). The flats are furnished with a living room suite, beds and dining
table and chairs, and curtains. The bathroom has a shower rail and curtain.
You will be asked to go though an inventory list when taking on the apartment.
At the end of your contract when you relinquish the apartment, the inventory
list will be checked and you will be asked to make good any breakages
or losses (fair wear and tear excepted). School can
provide a cleaning service, but most people like to make their own arrangements
to employ a maid to do the laundry and keep the apartments clean and tidy.
Quite often teachers will share the cost of a maid between apartments. The Braeburn
Gitanga Road campus is in an area of Nairobi called Lavington, to the
west of the City. This is well
away from the City Centre but close enough to shopping centres and a range
of interesting places to visit and see (see THE
REALLY USEFUL LIST) The Gitanga Road campus encompasses both Braeburn School and Braeburn High School, and is also the base for Braeburn Schools Ltd head office. The head office departments include Braeburn Services, operations, human resources, accounts, transport, marketing, school fees, vehicle workshop, carpentry workshop, metal workshops, IT, Braeburn Theatres, Total Escapade (the theatre costume hire company) and Braeburn Club. Upon request,
Braeburn staff members can receive assistance with any of the above through
the School Office, Human Resources and Payroll Departments. |
