PROSPECTUS

Physical Education & Swimming
Children are given opportunities to experiment with, refine and practice physical abilities and skills, which can be used in planned activities. They will explore and develop control of their body movements as well as learn about healthy living.

They will experience gymnastics, dance, team games and play a variety of sports namely rounders, football, netball, cricket, basketball, hockey, tag rugby and athletics. All children have swimming lessons. Teamwork and co-operation are taught as well as healthy competition being encouraged. We have a number of teams that play competitively with other Nairobi schools during the academic year. Sports Days and Swimming Galas are also key events in the school year, as are Inter-House and Inter-School competitions

Personal, Social & Health Education
The value of each and the emphasis on self-esteem are at the root of our personal, social and health education programme. The principles of fairness, trust, respect, honesty, basic hygiene and healthy living are promoted throughout the school in various ways.

Sex education aims to support children in coping with the physical, mental and emotional challenges of growing up. Parents of older children are invited each year to share how the various issues are addressed and Parents are informed when children begin this part of the PHSE programme.

Educational Facilities
We have a well-equipped ICT Room, which is used for computer lessons but this is also open during lunch time for children to use. Our French room leads from the I.C.T. Room and both these areas benefit from the fact that the Music Room is below!
Our music room produces wonderful sounds from classes who are signing, learning to play the recorder or individual children who are learning a specific instrument. Our School has two choirs and a musical ensemble.

Outdoor Education
From humble beginnings of camp-outs on the school field, the Outdoor Education Department has rapidly expanded and now provides a programme of trips and activities for Years 4 to 7. The basis for all these trips is that the children are as independent as possible, which means pitching tents, cooking meals, washing up etc. The programme ensures progression, with longer trips and more responsibility further up the school. Extra-Curricular
At Braeburn School we also recognise the importance of Extra Curricular Activities. As part of this is we run regular clubs one day a week which let children experience a whole host of different activities. Click here to learn more about some of the clubs that were on offer this year. Clubs.

School Hours
Our school day begins at 8.10am and finishes at 3.30pm. We have a mid-morning break from 12:15pm to 1:40pm. During the lunch time we can play or join in lunch time activities and after school there are some extra curricular activities too.

In the Classroom
Our School Library provides a quiet area for children to work in and to enjoy a range of books. It is extremely well resourced and well used both during school time and the holidays.

Our classrooms are bright and cheerful to reflect the on going work of the class and year group. Each classroom has its own class library and the resources to support our teaching and the children's learning.
Classrooms are arranged and organized to support children in becoming independent learners. Many of these organizational systems are followed throughout the school.

Around the School
From the main entrance to the school and school office, a long corridor houses the main classroom block for our Year 2 to 6 pupils. Each year group has three classes and these are arranged together in family groups. Along the same corridor, we have our first aid room, which is staffed by Mrs. Kinimi, our fully qualified nurse. Hidden away in the corner, is our animal area. Helping to look after the animals is an extremely popular lunch time activity.

Our Year 1 classes back onto the Early Years Unit. The Early Years Unit is self-contained and has its own outdoor area.

Our theatre is our assembly hall and this is used for all our class and school assemblies during the week. Each class has their own assembly throughout the school year and parents and family friends are invited to come and share these. We also use the theatre for a variety of school productions and events as well as enjoying productions from the various groups within the Nairobi community.

The older children use our well equipped science and art room whilst the younger children do these activities in their classrooms.

Sports
All the children at Braeburn School learn how to swim and enjoy an active life style. Our swimming pool area is inviting and most of the time, the water is an inviting temperature too!

Sports and Physical Education form an important part of our school life.

We play all the major sports - cricket, football, rugby, rounders, netball, hockey and basketball and we enjoy athletics and cross-country too.

Children may also play tennis, short tennis and squash. We have a number of teams, which represent our school but we also have a number of clubs for children who simply like to play a particular sport.

Sports Days and Swimming Galas are exciting events in the school calendar and well supported by parents.
