ADMISSIONS Children can be enrolled at Braeburn Nanyuki International School beginning with our Early Years Section. The Early Years Unit takes children from 18 months old to age four. Class entry into the Primary School Year 1 is in the September following a child’s fifth birthday. Entry assessment may include informal interviews with the class teacher and / or with the Deputy and Head Teacher. Formal entry tests in Mathematics and Literacy may be required for admission into the more senior classes. Whilst most children will start with the school at the beginning of the academic year (September) we are equipped to take children throughout the course of the academic year through our support systems. REGISTRATION A non-refundable registration fee accompanies a duly completed official Application Form as an entry requirement to the Braeburn Nanyuki International School. Thereafter, confirmation of an offer for a place at the school will usually be made in writing upon completion of all entry procedures. Children who cannot be accommodated immediately are put on a waiting list. CURRICULUM THE EARLY YEARS: At Braeburn Nanyuki these are the pre-Key Stage years comprising four classes – The Pre-Creche (18 months – 1 year olds), The Creche (2 – 3 Year olds), The Nursery (3-4 Year olds) and the Reception (4-5 Year olds). Carefully designed programmes enable the children to gain knowledge and skills from first hand experience based on the ‘Early Learning Goals’ initiative. Purposeful play is also an important facet of the curriculum at this stage enabling the children to naturally develop their social, emotional, physical and creative skills. Each of our classes provides a safe, secure and stimulating learning environment to small groups of children with qualified teachers and class assistants giving highly individualised attention and supervision. In addition our children also benefit from our outdoor programmes as they do from Music, Dance, Swimming, Physical Education, Role playing and Pet keeping. Our programmes here seamlessly transit into the National Curriculum covered in the Primary and Senior sections of the school. THE PRIMARY SCHOOL: All our classes in the Primary section aim at securing for each child a structured and progressive achievement of the National Curriculum goals through whole class teaching/learning, group work and individual activities or tasks. We focus on making learning a journey of discovery for the children, creating every possible growth opportunity academically, physically and socially. Ultimately, we aim to ensure that children become independent learners and that through taking responsibility for their own achievement the children strive to attain their full potential – being the best that they can be. Throughout our Primary section class sizes are kept small to ensure that our widely experienced teachers have an optimal level of interaction and can offer specialised support to the pupils under their care. We similarly endeavour to extend this to our levels of interaction and partnership with parents at the school. Children develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of Literacy, Numeracy and Science as the Core Subjects within the structure of the National Curriculum. In addition, a wide range of Foundation subjects are offered at the school with the aim of ensuring that the children are getting their full entitlement to a broad based, active and stimulating curriculum. Some of these include: Information Technology, Humanities, Art, Design Technology, Personal Social & Health Education, Citizenship, Religion, Music, Physical Education, Swimming, French, Dance and Drama. Whilst most subjects are class based and taught by the Class Teacher a number of the Foundation subjects are taken by subject specialists to further enhance the exposure and competence of the children. Pupils develop knowledge, understanding and skills related to all subjects through a mainly thematic approach to specially selected topics each term. Our classrooms are bright, colourful and very well resourced – creating a friendly, warm and highly focussed learning environment for the children. KEY STAGE ONE (1) Pupils enter Key Stage 1 in Year 1 at the age of five. During the first two years in Primary they mainly build on the skills they will have developed in the Pre-Key Stage Years spent in the Early Years Unit. Lessons here are carefully crafted to be practical as they are stimulating. At the end of Year 2, when most pupils are seven years old, informal National Assessment Tests are taken. These help to gauge the level of our pupil attainment relative to the National Curriculum benchmarks and that of other children worldwide within the same system. KEY STAGE TWO (2) This covers the Years 3 through to 6. Lessons here are colourful and increasingly become more structured. Progressively, greater focus is given to subject intensive learning thus consolidating the more general approach of the initial years to enhance the academic experience of the children. The teaching of phonics, reading and the conventions of grammar has a high priority in our daily Literacy hour. Language is increasingly developed through structured reading, writing, speaking and listening exercises and experiences. In Mathematics a daily numeracy hour focuses on the relevance of math to everyday situations. Investigations are practical and based on the process of enquiry. Mental agility with numbers is also an intrinsic part of this process. Our Science lessons aim to exploit the natural curiosity of children about the world around them. They develop critical knowledge about themselves and about how things work around us, progressively becoming adept in the use of logical, scientific skills. ASSESSMENT Assessment at Braeburn Nanyuki International School is considered important in gauging the individual progress that each child is making against established age-related and target-based benchmarks. In the Early Years as well as in the Junior Primary sections assessment takes an informal, class based approach – with the Class Teacher setting, reviewing and reporting each child’s progress on a series of themed / topic based exercises and other learning opportunities/experiences each term or half-term. In the more senior primary years these assessments can be further supported by more formal testing, homework tasks, assignments, projects as well as through an end of year evaluation. Each year, end of Key Stage National Curriculum Tests as well as other optional National Tests may be administered to support the internal assessments. THE SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS (SEN) PROGRAMME At Braeburn Nanyuki we believe that all children should be supported to realise their full potential. We have therefore established an inclusive and integral Special Educational Needs (SEN) programme within the school framework for those children who may have specific learning difficulties. A full time, qualified and widely experienced SEN teacher runs this programme at the school in consultation with parents, class teachers and the school’s Senior Management Team. Specialised resources are continually acquired to provide the necessary support to the learners. Through this programme many common learning difficulties in children can be overcome when they are diagnosed early. For more advanced learning difficulties the school is able to offer specific advice to cater for the needs of the child. PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORT A key element of our Physical Education and sport programme is to develop the necessary skill in the various games on offer as well as to enhance the general fitness of our children. All year groups have at least two hours of physical education and swimming each week. Our programmes here are carefully developed to ensure skill and knowledge progression lesson by lesson, week by week and term on term. In addition, we are continually striving to involve our children in as many competitive events as we can within the Braeburn Group of Schools as well as with other schools of similar ilk. Some of our children have participated at various sports meets for individual events in the past such as the Inter-Braeburn Schools Swimming Gala as well as at the St. Andrew’s Turi Cross Country Championships. And the results have been most pleasing indeed. We are constantly exploring further avenues to enhance the sporting exposure and experience of the children. EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES We are steadily building on the range and breadth of our extra-curricular offering at the school. Our current activities are mainly to do with the development of drama, music and movement, creativity in the arts as well as exposure to modern foreign languages. As the school grows we have every intention of widening this scope and are already consulting with various local experts and facilities about just these possibilities. Each term we have been able to involve the children in thematic musical and dramatic presentations both as an integral part of school assemblies as well as for a broader audience of parents and visitors. Annually we programme an Easter presentation, a Bon fire night, a Christmas concert, school choir evenings and an Open Day where the children get the opportunity to entertain audiences as well as to show case their talents, successes and achievements. We also take children on educational visits both as an integral part of their school / field work as well as to build on their adventure, leadership and out door experience. BEHAVIOUR, DISCIPLINE, HOME AND SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP Within our school community we are keen to ensure that children learn to work and live together harmoniously and as part of a team. We teach them that each individual is an important part of our lives and that each person’s contributions, ideas, efforts or even diversity must be respected and celebrated. To achieve this each year develops its own set of classroom ‘rules’ that are guided by the overall school philosophy and framework. In the more senior classes, a School Code of Conduct is developed and adhered to. Our emphasis is on rewarding achievement and good behaviour, always seeking to develop a keen sense of right from wrong. We continually stress the importance of honesty, trust, fairness and self –discipline. We are also keen to encourage and praise as well as to emphasise that good behaviour is the normal expectation. Our well developed Pastoral system ensures that the children will always have suitable mentors to emulate, but also that through the school’s leadership training programme in the Senior Years we develop in the children a marked sense of responsibility. In all our undertakings, whether Pastoral or Academic we seek to involve our parents. We are keen that the home – school relationship should be an open, honest, trusting and supportive partnership. We operate an open door policy where we actively encourage parents and guardians to fully participate in the learning process of their children. To discuss aspects of our curriculum and each individual child’s progress we hold parent / teacher conferences and issue detailed school reports each term as well as arrange curriculum evenings throughout the year. Through our weekly newsletters and ‘e-shots’, we keep parents and guardians fully informed and abreast of all school events and developments. SCHOOL SERVICES MEALS Our small but very well equipped and fully staffed kitchen prepares hot, nutritious lunches and desserts for the students at the school daily. We also provide light snacks, juice and/or beverages for morning and afternoon breaks. A daily or weekly menu and the related charges can be provided on request from the School Office. SCHOOL TRANSPORT At the moment we have two established school transport routes moving out through Nanyuki town in three different directions and ending up at the towns of Naro Moru, Timau and Dol dol. We run vehicles three times each day to cater for the pick up and dropping of students. We have plans to build these so as to extend our presence into Nyeri and Meru towns. School transportation is provided by well maintained school vans of the Toyota Hiace variety and our drivers are well trained to handle the needs of children, very experienced and familiar with most areas in these localities. A full list of the school transport stops, timings and the related charges can be obtained from the School Office. INDIVIDUALISED MUSIC / INSTRUMENT TRAINING Under the auspices of the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music - UK (ABRSM) programme the Music Department of the school offers specialised and individual training in voice and piano. This programme not only already involves many of the children in the junior and senior primary sections but is also open to students or residents within Nanyuki town. The training leads up to examinations from the ABRSM and successful candidates are awarded internationally recognised qualifications in the grades taken. Further information about enrolment into the school’s ABRSM programme can be obtained from the School Office. UPCOMING DEVELOPMENTS FULL AND WEEKLY BOARDING The school has recently acquired, on a long term lease, suitable accommodation for the development of a medium sized boarding facility within the vicinity of our current location. This six bed roomed unit also houses an expansive living area, a spacious kitchen and a suitably sized and secure outlying compound. Once our plans are complete we will have a well appointed, fully staffed boarding house for students on a weekly or full time basis to cater for children who may wish to attend the school from more distant locations. Further details can again be obtained from the School Office. RELOCATION TO PURPOSE BUILT SITE Braeburn Schools Limited is committed to the progressive and enhanced development of the Nanyuki School over the coming years and towards this end negotiations are at an advanced stage for the purchase of an expansive property close to our current location. The acquisition of this property will see the commencement of high quality facility development as well as a major boost to the range of services that the school will be able to offer. THE KENYA HEADMISTRESSES ASSOCIATION – EYU TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAMME As serious educational practitioners we are keen to develop the level of teacher training particularly in the foundation stages of a child’s schooling, that is, the Early Years. One of the most successful and highly regarded teacher training programmes at this level is offered under the auspices of the Kenya Headmistresses Association for Kindergartens (KHA). Within our staff are recognised KHA teacher trainers willing to offer their knowledge, skill and expertise in raising standards of Early Years teaching by running courses leading up to the award of the KHA Teacher Certificate. We therefore aim to soon introduce this programme as an adult learning opportunity for residents of Nanyuki and environs who may be desirous of pursuing a career in teaching or on improving upon their general teaching skills. Details of this upcoming programme are available at the School Office.
