Situated in Shanzu on the North Coast of Mombasa, Braeburn Mombasa International School follows the National Curriculum of England and Wales, and all pupils sit the Statutory Attainment Tests (SATs) issued from the UK at the end of Key Stages 1 and 2. The pupil/teacher ratio is approximately 1-16 with trained Class Assistants for the Early Years and Key Stage 1 classes. In addition to the British curriculum subjects, all pupils learn French and Kiswahili from Year 2 to Year 6. Pupils are with their Class Teachers most of the day but go to specialists for Languages, ICT, Music, PE and Games. They are encouraged to use the Library for research as well as reading. Learning support is provided for pupils with Special Educational Needs and, because we have so many nationalities, we have to cater for children who start with little or no English. Classrooms are large and well ventilated in a rural setting surrounded by coconut palms. As well as sports fields the children have a grassed play area. The family atmosphere and pastoral care of the pupils are crucial to our ethos and parents are encouraged to be involved. School begins at 07:55 and finishes at 14:50. Optional after school activities run from 15:00 – 16.00. The Early Years Unit (Playgroup, Nursery and Reception) finishes at 12:00. Homework is formally set from Year 3 upwards from half an hour (Y3) to one hour (Y6) per night. This is to encourage pupils to develop good study habits for later on. Comprehensive reports are issued at the end of every term and parents are formally invited to meet with teachers once a term. The school provides transport and meals for those who require them and we also offer weekly boarding (Monday – Thursday). Uniform can be purchased from the school store. Sport, music and drama are important aspects of the school ethos with cricket, rounders and athletics in the first term, hockey and swimming in the second and rugby, netball and soccer in the third. Cross-country running, tennis and basketball are also included in our valuable after school activities which take place every day. We are an ABRSM practical examinations centre where we have many talented young musicians and we stage two musical productions each year. We believe that happy children and teachers work well together thus providing a firm foundation for the future.
